Women make up only about 25% of angel investors and 29% of the entrepreneurs that sought angel capital in 2015. Investors still favor male founders over their female counterparts. Unfortunately, the feeling is mutual, as women founders still find that male investors cannot always grasp innovative solutions for the female demographic and the potential market size they represent.

Between 2011 and 2013, companies with a female CEO received $1.5 billion in venture capital investment while companies led by men received 34 times that amount. A recent study of 22,000 publicly traded companies found that an increase in leadership positions in a company for women from 0% to 30% is associated with an increase of 15% in profitability. Female tech entrepreneurs, on average, generate a 35% higher return on investment than their male counterparts. (Source: Fast Company)

For the first two quarters in 2017, startups with a female founder raised $332 million in seed investment, or around 15 percent of all seed funding dollars. Approximately $6.5 billion has been invested in female-founded companies, representing more than 11 percent of all dollars invested in the first two quarters of 2017. (Source: TechCrunch)

Fewer than 5% of all VC-funded firms have women on their executive teams, and only 2.7% had a female CEO. (Source: Diana Report Women Entrepreneurs 2014: Bridging the Gender Gap in Venture Capital)

By reducing the barriers to entry for investing, and furthering their understanding of the investment climate, we can cultivate the next wave of female angel investors. It is time for women to understand the true power of their capital to green-light and validate new opportunities.

Creating an environment for women investors to thrive is essential to the innovation and diversity of entrepreneurial success in South Florida. When women begin investing, even in small amounts, they shift the world.

By educating and supporting women as they make their first forays into angel investment, we will continue to push progress towards a more equitable world.

Let's cultivate the next generation of female angel investors.
